McKenzie Method

Ortho_Lumbar.JPG

Also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), the McKenzie Method is a philosophy of active patient involvement that is used by practitioners and patients all over the world for back, neck and extremity problems.

The McKenzie Method promotes the body’s potential to heal itself without medication, surgery, or other passive modalities. The MDT system is designed to identify the mechanical problem and develop a plan to correct and improve the mechanics to decrease or eliminate the pain and functional problems. This may mean that moving in one direction may provoke and worsen the symptoms, and moving in the opposite direction may eliminate the pain and restore function. This is known as Directional Preference.

The Method uses an evidence based approach that is proven to be a reliable assessment tool finding prognosis early (within 1-3 sessions), arriving at better outcomes as well as preventing recurrence of injury. The unique combination of postural education and the application of specific individualized exercises enable patients to effectively self-manage their condition. This process promotes patient empowerment, increases satisfaction with treatment and is cost-effective compared to other treatment strategies.
